The 9 Best Pillows of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

These plush pillows suit every type of sleeper

Stacked pillows we recommend displayed on a mattress

The Spruce / Tierney McAfee

If you’ve ever experienced waking up with a stiff neck or struggling to find a comfortable sleeping position, it could be time for a new pillow. With extensive testing of over 118 pillows, we've discovered that the best pillow for you is dependent on your preferred sleeping position and individual preferences.

For side sleepers, optimal support is crucial to maintain proper alignment of the neck and spine. We recommend medium to fuller pillows, particularly those crafted from memory foam, such as the Casper Snow Foam pillow. Back sleepers, on the other hand, benefit from a medium-firm pillow for adequate support. And for stomach sleepers, a thin and soft pillow often provides the best comfort.

Besides your sleep position, the fill of your pillow can make or break your sleep. Personal preference is key in whether you prefer something more fluffy and traditional like down or want to try a more custom fit like a shredded memory foam pillow where you can use as much or as little stuffing as you prefer. Take a look at some of the best pillows we’ve tested at our homes and in The Lab over the years that will leave you feeling refreshed in the morning.

Plush, cool throughout the night, and impressively comfy, we absolutely loved Snuggle-Pedic’s Original Memory Foam Pillow in our at-home testing. This pillow lived up to its name, delivering snuggle-worthy comfort and coziness that felt appropriately soft to sleep atop. However, we were particularly impressed by the consistent support and all-night cooling it provided night after night. If you’re a hot sleeper, this hybrid pillow features an internal layer of cooling foam fill, which helped maintain a cool-to-the-touch temperature for us all night long.

That cooling fill, which is nestled inside an outer memory foam layer, adds temperature regulation as well as support. After sleeping on this pillow nightly for a month, we found that the fluffy loft of these layers comfortably supported our head and neck without compromising our alignment. It appropriately matched its promised firmness, living up to our expectations.

We also really liked the high-quality details in the design and construction of this pillow. Its perforated foam (which likely helps enhance its cooling capability) and textured surface were touches we appreciated, and we found the zipper and seams to be well-sewn for durability over the long-term. While we don’t love that the perforations in the foam are visible through a pillowcase which made our bed look a little funny.

What We Like
  • Body-contouring memory foam

  • Suits all sleep positions

  • Easy to re-fluff in the dryer

What We Don't Like
  • Wonky seams

  • Smaller than a typical Standard pillow

Rest Haven’s Shredded Memory Foam Pillow checked all the boxes in our testing, from comfort to support to versatility. We found that it feels luxurious to sleep on whether we were on our back, side, or stomach, and we think its price makes it a total steal for the comfort. Although this pillow isn’t designed to offer extra cooling, in our testing we found it felt refreshing and cool–a great perk for those who run hot. We also loved the way the shredded memory foam adjusted and wrapped around our head and neck. Want a bit more loft and fluffiness? You can toss the pillow in the dryer for about 20 minutes to give it more fullness.

We didn’t love the slightly wonky and unevenly-stitched seams along the edges of this pillow, but we didn’t find this to detract from its overall comfort. Additionally, it’s worth noting we found it was thinner and shorter than a typical Standard-size pillow. It didn’t fill out a Standard pillowcase completely–so keep size in mind if that’s an important detail for you. In our testing, the coolness and support outweighed any disadvantage related to size.

What We Don’t Like
  • Heats up quickly

Constructed with a soft, flexible fill that can be moved around and manipulated, the Birch by Helix Organic Pillow is plenty plush, but it’s also supportive enough to make you feel like you’re resting in a malleable, custom-conforming nest. Inside, the fill is latex–but to our surprise, sleeping atop this pillow felt like resting on a high-quality down or feather pillow. It featured the same light, airy, and cushy loft, but unlike a feather or down pillow, this one actually bounced back and offered consistent support with the weight of our head (or a medicine ball—see how we tested them here) on top. Once the weight was lifted, the pillow regained its original loftiness in just 14 seconds.

If you run hot while you sleep, this probably isn’t the best pillow for you (instead, check out our best cooling pick from Coop Home Goods below). Our only complaint in testing was the speed with which this pillow warmed up. We could feel it get noticeably warmer to the touch in under five minutes, and it took about two minutes to cool down again once we lifted our heads. If you aren’t worried about cooling, then this pillow is a great luxe option that’ll cradle and support you with an almost feather-like feel. During our testing, it left us feeling like we’d slept on a high-quality hotel pillow.

What We Don’t Like
  • Absorbs and traps heat

Memory foam pillows can offer firmer support than your typical down, feather, or down alternative pillow, with better contouring and more weight distribution. In our testing, we found that Casper’s Foam Pillow performed the best out of all the memory foam options we tried; we liked its head and neck support so much that we’d be thrilled to own a few of these pillows! We liked how the single-piece foam structure supported us on our back, side, and stomach comfortably, cradling our neck as well as our head consistently. The material’s resiliency helped provide increased neck support, a detail that was particularly key for sleeping on our back and side.

While we liked the foam nature of this pillow in our testing, we did note that it didn’t live up to one of its biggest promises: staying cool. Casper touts this pillow as cooling and one that doesn’t absorb heat, but we found that it did in fact absorb and trap heat while we slept. However, it wasn’t so noticeable that it altered how we slept. Overall, when it came to comfort on our back, side, and stomach, this pillow proved to offer all-around comfort and support–and that’s what makes it such a great foam pick to us.

What We Don’t Like
  • Lacks fullness

Constructed with a springy latex fill that bounces back even with the weight of a medicine ball on top, Brooklyn Bedding’s latex pillow is a standout for us because of its resiliency. When we put this pillow to use, it offered consistent head and neck support, bouncing right back into shape within seconds after being folded and flexed. That resilient latex, which typically makes for a nicely breathable fill, also added good temperature regulation to this pillow’s list of perks. We found it didn’t trap heat and maintained a comfortable temperature to the touch throughout our use.

Overall, we liked the feel of sleeping on this latex pillow. However, we prefer a bit more thickness or fullness from our pillows, and this one from Brooklyn Bedding runs thinner. It isn’t the plushest pillow on our list (that would be the Snuggle-Pedic!), so those who like a fuller and more sink-in feel will find this pick isn’t the coziest. It’s worth noting we found it comfortable sleeping on our back and our side, and because of the thinner nature we think side sleepers may want a bit more fluff in a pillow.

What We Like
  • High-quality materials and construction

What We Don’t Like
  • Light initial odor

  • Fill requires adjusting after every wash

We love the high-quality touches on the Coop Home Goods The Eden pillow, from the soft outer cover, well-constructed stitching and seams, and breathable fill. What blew us away, though, was the amazing cooling capability of the fill. Unlike many other cooling pillows, The Eden features adjustable fill so you can customize the loftiness and firmness of your pillow. In the middle of the adjustable fill sits a gel-infused cooling core, which keeps the surface cool to the touch. We found it stayed cool to the touch, and nicely breathable, all night long. In fact, even after we tossed the pillow in the washing machine and dryer, it still came out feeling cool.

While we love the customizable nature of this adjustable fill pillow, we do want to note that the fill fluffs up after every wash. In our testing, this meant that we had to remove fill after washing, and then add a bit back in after a few days of use. It’s not a make-or-break detail, but you’ll want to be prepared to potentially need somewhat regular fill adjustments if you’re a picky sleeper.

What We Don’t Like
  • Flattens with use

If you’re searching for a great down pillow, Helix’s Down & Feather option offers a great down and feather blend. We were impressed with this pillow’s luxury feel in our first use, and it feels comparable to a hotel down pillow in terms of plushness and loft. It’s nicely thick and morphs to your head and neck. We liked this detail, and we didn’t find that we sunk in too deeply. Plus, we found it was nicely temperature-regulating; it maintained a decent temperature all night long, and we didn’t need to worry about flipping the pillow or adjusting due to heat.

It’s worth noting that like any down or feather pillow, this Helix pick does flatten out with regular use. In our testing, we found that while it seemed nicely durable, it did lose loft within the course of a month. While regular refluffing is a common need of down pillows, the flattening after use was a minor point of annoyance over the course of our daily use. However, we’d still recommend it for those who love the feel of down and want a hotel-style feel with good temperature regulation

What We Don’t Like
  • Fill may change with frequent washing

With great overall comfort and a smushable yet supportive fiber fill, Slumbercloud’s Core Down Alternative Pillow is our favorite option for those who want the fluffiness of down without an actual down or down-and-feather fill. In our testing, we found Slumberclould’s pillow to feel impressively plush and fluffy despite being thinner at first glance. We liked that it required less bunching and squishing into shape to get comfortable at night, and we thought it was decently supportive. Plus, thanks to its down-alternative fiber fill, we were able to toss the entire pillow in the washer and dryer when it needed cleaning.

Even after a month of use–including a run through the wash–we didn’t see any signs of wear on this pillow. We love that it’s well-constructed, with no shrinkage. The fiber fill was still pretty fluffy after a wash and dry, but we couldn’t fully assess how the pillow’s airy fiber fill would hold up to regular washings, since we only put it through one cycle.

What We Don’t Like
  • Heavy

If you’re someone who moves around while you sleep and doesn’t stick with a single position, Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Pillow is a great fit for your needs. This memory foam pillow features a medium firmness thanks to a thick single piece of adaptive TEMPUR material, which is meant to cradle your head and neck from any angle or position.

In our testing, we found that this responsive foam did work as intended, and we liked how soft and luxurious it felt. As we changed positions throughout the night, it kept us perfectly comfortable. Additionally, while the TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Pillow may not have directly cooled us down while sleeping, we did love how well the foam material maintained a cool temperature throughout the night. We didn’t find ourselves tossing and turning due to warmth (or trying to flip to the cool side of the pillow).

Additionally, this pillow is noticeably heavier than all of the others on our list. This is thanks to the unique TEMPUR memory foam, which is thicker and less airy than other foam pillows like the Casper Foam Pillow. While it may not affect its comfort, it does make it a bit tricker to slip a pillowcase on.

Final Verdict

When it comes to all around comfort and support, we love the Snuggle-Pedic Original Memory Foam Pillow. Made with quality materials and touches that enhance the pillow’s durability, we found it hard to top the plushness, the cushioning, and even the all-night coolness of this foam option. For comfort at a lower price–and for every possible sleep position–we also like the Rest Haven Shredded Memory Foam Bed Pillow, which adapted to every way we slept and offered great head and neck contouring. Plus, it’s easy to re-fluff as needed for extra loft.

Other Options We Tested

Saatva Latex Pillow: This latex pillow impressed us with its support and responsive fill. When we slept atop it, it quickly cradled our head and neck without leaving us feeling like we were sinking into the material. We also liked its plumpness–but this proved to be a drawback, as the pillow was quite heavy and felt almost like a weighted pillow. Additionally, when we washed the removable cover, it shrunk considerably, leaving us struggling to get it back onto the pillow. While we thought this was a quality latex option, it didn’t quite measure up to the same performance as our best latex pick from Brooklyn Bedding.

Casper Hybrid Pillow with Snow Technology: We liked how well this Casper pillow held its shape, and it was a standout after one week of use with no need for refluffing or changes to its thickness. It bounced back to shape quickly after a night of sleep and kept our head and neck well-aligned. While the level of support was excellent, this pillow felt like a foam brick underneath our head and shoulders. It’s one that would suit back sleepers well, but it may be too firm for other sleep styles and comfort levels. Ultimately, while this pillow offered decent comfort and cooling, we found it to be too heavy and not nearly as comfortable as our best foam pillow pick, Casper’s Foam Pillow, or as cooling as Coop Home Goods’ The Eden Pillow (our best cooling pillow pick).

How We Tested

To determine which pillows are among the best available, our team of testers–which included side, back, stomach, and all-position sleepers–spent over 1,500 hours resting atop these pillows in their own beds. They evaluated each pillow across a number of categories, including quality, durability, comfort, support, and value.

  • Pillow Quality: When assessing pillows for quality, we closely examined the material and construction of each one. We noted the feel of the pillow fabric as well as any cover included, noting details like seam stitching and the ease of any zippers or removable covers. We also considered any odors, filling issues (like feather quills poking through the fabric), texture, and if the fill was removable.
  • Pillow Durability: To judge each pillow’s durability, we looked at these same details as well as how the loft was altered with nightly use and washing (for pillows that were machine-washable). Pillows that showed no signs of wear and developed no lumps or shrinkage were rated the most durable.
  • Pillow Comfort and Support: To assess comfort and support of the pillows we tested, we assessed their feel in every sleeping position, including each tester’s preferred sleeping position. We also used each according to its suggested sleep recommendations–sleeping on our backs if a pillow was touted as “best for back sleepers,” for example–and noted their firmness or softness. We considered details like the alignment of our head, neck, and back, the ease of changing positions, and if we felt properly supported at different angles. Additionally, we took note of any design details the pillows offered that helped enhance comfort or increase support while we slept.
  • Value: Lastly, when it came to value, we looked at whether we thought a pillow’s price was fair based on all of the above factors. We considered which pillows we thought were worth their full price, and which were outliers in terms of quality compared to price.

What to Look for in a Pillow

Material (Fill)

The fill you choose comes down to personal preference and the best fill for your sleep position. Here is what to know about each type.

  • Down: Some of the most expensive of pillows, down-filled pillows can be great for sleepers who move around at night since these pillows can be molded to how you sleep. Down pillows last a long time but can be harder to launder and can fall flat after many years. Many people are allergic to down pillows as well.
  • Feathers: If you don't want to shell out the money for a down pillow a feather pillow is a more affordable option. However, there are some drawbacks, like feather quills that can stick through the pillow and these pillows can clump more over time.
  • Down alternative: A pillow fill made from synthetic fiber that’s meant to mimic the feel of down. With a lower price, this hypoallergenic alternative often offers a similar level of support and comfort as the real thing. These types of pillows have come a long way over the years.
  • Memory foam: Which includes pillows designed out of one solid piece of foam and those filled with varying levels of shredded foam. These can feature adjustable fill or an ergonomically-designed shape; in either form, the foam is meant to cradle and mold to your head providing the most amount of support out of any fill.
  • Latex: This is similar to memory foam in its structure, and can either be found in one solid pillow or pillows with adjustable shredded latex fill. With more bounce than memory foam, latex can feel soft but offer increased support.
  • Gel-infused: These pillow features a layer of gel that helps provide a cooling effect for hot sleepers. Gel is typically used in combination with memory foam pillows, and you’ll most commonly find the gel layer sits right at the surface so you can feel the coolness by touch.
  • Buckwheat: A filling made with buckwheat hulls that can be shaped and adjusted to achieve your desired comfort and support. Though a bit noisy, those who prefer firmer support tend to like these pillows.
  • Hybrid: A combination of different materials. It’s common for hybrid pillows to mix down alternative fibers with memory foam, gel-infused layers with foam or latex, and even down and feathers to provide the best of multiple material types.

Sleep Position

In addition to material, you’ll also want to consider how you like to sleep as you shop for a pillow. Your preferred position, whether on your stomach, back, or side, will affect how comfortable and supportive you find different pillows to be. In certain positions (like on your back), firmness is a must; in others (like your stomach), a softer feel is a better fit.

According to Robert Hayden, DC, chiropractor and spokesperson for the American Chiropractic Association, sleep position plays a significant role in the type of pillow that’s best for you: “You simply need a roll behind the neck for support if you are a back sleeper. If you're a side sleeper, your pillow should have enough vertical height to keep your head level so you do not create stress points in the joints of the neck.”

If you’re in search of additional support, you can consider pillows that feature special design cues like curvature meant to cradle the neck–we didn’t find any of the contoured pillows we tested to be standouts in comfort or support, but these options do exist if you’re in need of a different shape.

Third-Party Certifications

When choosing a new pillow, it’s helpful to look for options that have been third-party tested and certified for consumer safety or sustainability. For example, down products can carry a Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification, which identifies pillows that include down and feathers that don’t come from animals subjected to unnecessary harm.

Or, if you’re opting for a foam pillow, you can choose one that’s made with rigorously-tested foam. Make sure you’re looking at third-party certifications that are verifiable and meaningful, like CertiPUR-US certification. “CertiPUR-US certified foams are analyzed for content and emissions in approved, accredited laboratories,” says Helen Sullivan, APR, Fellow PRSA of the Communications Counsel for CertiPUR-US. “All of the chemicals and metals (like lead) we test for–and the testing methodology and protocols–are included in our Technical Guidelines… a living document [that’s] updated as science and research dictate.”

Other third-party certifications you may encounter as you shop include STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX, GREENGUARD Gold, and Made Safe. These are textile certifications that indicate pillows constructed out of sustainable materials, via sustainable or environmentally-minded processes, or tested for certain chemicals.

No matter which certification you’re most interested in, it’s always a good idea to vet products that bear these labels before buying. As Sullivan notes, “[CertiPUR-US is] so careful to make accurate claims and abide by the Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides, which help companies only make claims that are true and can be substantiated, but only if everyone else did, too! Consumers should be wary of statements like ‘chemical-free’ (it’s not possible) and question some claims like ‘organic’ [and] ‘all-natural’ which are often overstated or inaccurate.”

Standout Features

Adjustable Filling

While most pillows can be fluffed and manipulated to get loftier, plusher, and cozier when they start to fall flat, some will actually allow you to adjust the comfort and firmness right at home–all you have to do is unzip the pillow. Adjustable fill pillows are a standout option for those who aren’t sure how firm they’d like their sleeping surface to be, or those who change positions regularly.

Adjustable fill pillows typically include extra fill so you can add or remove as much as you’d like (although some do also offer extra fill as an add-on for purchase). Adding extra fill material can increase the firmness and the thickness of your pillow as needed for sleeping on your back or side, while removing it can reduce the loft and offer a thinner sleep surface–a detail that’s ideal for stomach sleepers.

Cooling Properties

If you tend to warm up while you sleep and can’t stop searching for the cooler side of your pillow, you’ll want to seek out pillows that can help you stay cool. Many pillows are breathable, especially those with lofty filling like down or down alternative products. However, for those who really run hot, a specialized pillow with built-in cooling properties will be the most comfortable.

Cooling pillows can either feature a cooling insert, like the cooling gel-infused core inside the Coop Home Goods The Eden pillow; others will feature layers of extra-breathable or cooling material, like Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Cooling Pillow with two layers of temperature-regulating material. In our experience, the most cooling products are those that feature a combination of gel and memory foam fill.
